Animation Directors Speak Out

When a big name in animation points out the problems with today's industry, you know the problems have come to a head of sorts. Recently, Henry Selick had this to say on the current state of feature animation in the United States...

July Animation Tidbits

More tidbits for ya... Lovely French Frozen posters, by the way... Now if only there was a third one to make a triptych! Disney has done it before!

"Turbo" Loses the Race

Sadly, our little snail friend couldn't reach the top spot at the domestic box office nor could it muster up enough to make for a good opening weekend total. DreamWorks' Turbo, after taking in a decent $10 million on Wednesday and Thursday, only opened with a paltry $21 million for the weekend.

Thoughts on Comic-Con News

Note: This will of course cover a lot of the animation-related happenings at this year's Comic-Con, but also things on Disney as a whole (i.e. Marvel, Lucasfilm, live action film division...) and maybe some ramblings about other things...

Underdog or Underperformer?

DreamWorks' Turbo unexpectedly hit #1 on its opening day yesterday, but with a rather modest $5 million. If anything, I thought that this new DreamWorks film would have a hard time doing well let alone taking the #1 spot in an arena where Despicable Me 2 is dominating. Anyways, the great thing about Turbo hitting #1 is that animation could possibly dominate once again this coming weekend. Since Monsters University debuted towards the end of last month, animation has taken the spot for each following weekend.

Spoiled

If there's one thing I've been noticing about Disney's marketing for Pixar's films lately, it's that they reveal a lot of things... Too many things. Spoilers that help someone piece the whole plot together, or spoilers that give away something that you would not have expected... Let's dive in, shall we?

A Soaring Teaser

After months and months of waiting and seeing leaked images that were unfortunately pulled, we finally got a teaser for DreamWorks' hugely anticipated sequel to one of their best films... How To Train Your Dragon 2!

This teaser, simply put, is great. It gets fans and audiences alike pumped up for this sequel, as it seems like it is going to surpass the already impressive original. It packs the thrills, showing a great flight sequence that in many ways shows what's in store for us. More epic action will certainly be present, and an equally amazing score from John Powell. The teaser hints at how much bigger the story will be, if the plot synopsis alone didn't...

It's also interesting to note that DreamWorks has kicked off the campaign for this film first, and not the film that's coming out before it... Mr. Peabody & Sherman. Of course, they're probably doing this because the world is looking forward to this potential smash more than a film based on a classic cartoon. Smart move on DreamWorks' part, getting it out so early.

What do you think of the teaser?

By the way, does the lack of a title in this trailer (regardless of the fact that it's labelled How To Train Your Dragon 2 Teaser Trailer by DreamWorks' YouTube channel) imply that this film won't be called How To Train Your Dragon 2? After all, when Fox unveiled their full 2013-2018 animation slate, they put [working title] next to this film... Hmmmmmm...

The (Brief) Unveiling...

Well unfortunately, yesterday's exciting Walt Disney Animation Studios news had to be taken down. Honor Hunter of Blue Sky Disney broke the news last night concerning titles and plot details for three of the four untitled upcoming films that are being released between March 2016 and November 2018.

/Film posted the information shortly after Honor had to pull the original Blue Sky Disney article. Honor had to pull his article because The Walt Disney Company requested him to do so, and they had /Film take down their article. A real bummer...

Just like how DreamWorks Animation had the first images of How To Train Your Dragon 2 pulled, Disney felt the need to conceal this news from us... But we all know the details!

There's no need to pull them at this rate. That goes for you too, DreamWorks! Everyone has seen the Dragon 2 images and have gone gaga over them. Likewise, people have gone nuts (in a good way) over this Disney animation news, and it's only drummed up more excitement for their upcoming slate. I mean, there was already a lot of excitement over Frozen and Big Hero 6, but this piece of news only told us how awesome Disney Animation's upcoming slate of films is going to be. People need to get more excited about their future, and this news did just that!

Hopefully we'll get official announcements on these great new projects over the next couple of months, or maybe at D23... and maybe something on Pixar's untitled mystery films! Of course, we all can say... "Um... We knew that for months..."

Non-Classic Confusion

Prior to The Walt Disney Company's realization that releasing the animated classics on home video would usher in a successful era for both Walt Disney Home Video and the home media industry, the company kept certain animated classics out of reach from the American public. To wit, the animated classics that were always theatrically re-released every 7-10 years and never shown on television. Classics like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, Bambi, Cinderella, Peter PanSleeping Beauty and many more...

Rebooting and Rehashing

It seems like Disney is planning on re-imagining a lot of stories that they have already adapted for their animated classics in the past... As big budget live action tentpoles...

Some Movie Reviews...

Usually I review what I see right when I see it, but I've held things off... Especially a good review of Monsters University, but I'll mention a few things here along with my thoughts on other films that I've seen recently, so...

More Ice To Thaw

Us Americans will have to wait till September to see the full trailer for Walt Disney Animation Studios' Frozen, but across the Pacific, folks in Japan got an actual taste of the studio's 53rd feature...

Out of the Box

LAIKA's third film, The BoxTrolls, is not due out until the autumn of next year... But that's not stopping Focus Features from getting the word out right now with a teaser! Despite what I may think of the way they advertise LAIKA's films, I will commend them for actually drumming up buzz a year and a half before the studio's next film even opens.
