Strong to the Finish

Well looky here… A leaked first look at the Popeye film that Genndy Tartakovsky is directing for Sony Pictures Animation…

I think it looks great. Very close to the classic Fleischer look while feeling like its own cool thing, very Peanuts-esque in terms of the CGI and again, I'm glad that other studios are trying out different styles for computer animation. Films like this, The Book of Life and Peanuts, to me, are what we need in the feature animation world. It's too bad the pic is blurry, but this first look image indicates that the movie is indeed coming soon.

However, Bleeding Cool points out that Genndy will be a very busy man at Sony. But I truly don't think that Popeye and Can You Imagine? will hit theaters in 2016 and 2017 respectively, unless Tartavosky can miraculously direct these two films and Hotel Transylvania 2 (coming in fall 2015) at once. If anything, I think there will be two-year gaps between the films. Popeye will probably arrive in 2017, and Can You Imagine? will hit in 2019. But I'll be darned if they are 2016 and 2017 releases respectively.

What do you think? Are you happy with the look of the computer animated Popeye? Or not? Sound off below!
