Bigger and Bigger

The wait is finally over, the cast of Big Hero 6 has finally been revealed thanks to USA Today (as always) and Oh My Disney.

Of course, with the casting news comes an official first look at our main characters!

The good news is, we can put the Honey Lemon/Rapunzel issues to rest because the character doesn't really resemble the long-haired princess. The other designs are very close to the ones on the leaked posters, which were great to begin with.

I talked about the suits before, all are very colorful and match the characters' personalities. This film is bound to be a real color explosion, much like Wreck-It Ralph. It'll be very cool to see these suits in action, too. I mean, laser-knives and blade-like wheels? All kinds of cool stuff! I was also surprised to learn that Fred won't be turning into a kaiju in the film, he'll don a kaiju-suit instead, though it breathes fire so that is still neat. In short, the characters are already interesting and the film looks to be a real visual treat, as always for a Disney Animation film...

Since we knew who was voicing Go Go Tomago (Once Upon a Time's Jamie Chung) and Fred (How To Train Your Dragon and Gravity Falls' T.J. Miller), here's the rest of the cast, which is satisfying because it's a mix of big names and not-so-huge names.

  • Supah Ninjas' Ryan Potter will be voicing Hiro. Potter, like Hiro, is Asian. Puts the fear of Josh Hutcherson voicing Hiro to rest.
  • Scott Adist of 30 Rock fame, who also did voices for two Adult Swim stop-motion shows (Moral Orel and Mary Shelley's Frankenhole), will provide the voice of Baymax.
  • Damon Wayans, Jr. will voice Wasabi (the "No-Ginger" has been eliminated from his name), he's best known for New Girl and other TV shows.
  • Genesis Rodriguez voices Honey Lemon, who was in films like What To Expect When You're Expecting and the upcoming Kevin Smith film Tusk.

Of course, we already knew Jamie Chung (Once Upon a Time) was voicing Go Go Tomago and T.J. Miller (How To Train Your Dragon, Gravity Falls) would voice Fred. Maya Rudolph (Bridesmaids) will be voicing Hiro's eccentric hippie Aunt Cass, Daniel Henney (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) will voice his older brother Tadashi. Alan Tudyk plays a character named Alistair Frei, who I assume will be the villain since Tudyk voiced the villains in the last two Disney Animation films. Have we got another Disney regular here? James Cromwell (L.A. Confidential) will play Professor Callaghan.

Right off the bat, this is a very strong cast. The full trailer is sure to show all of these characters; leaked stills from a Japanese trailer show that Tadashi will most likely be featured so I can't see them leaving out the other non-heroes.

With an impressive cas, great character design (again, those suits are really cool and it's neat how they are all tech-based rather than being the usual) and the promise of large-scale thrills with an edge, Walt Disney Animation Studios has another winner on its hands with this film. Bring on the new trailer!
