Marvel Madness

In preparation for Comic-Con, Marvel/Disney has locked multiple dates for upcoming releases…

Their slate now goes all the way up to May 2019… Yep, we have now hit the big two-oh one-nine. Of course Disney would be the one to nab the first date of 2019. It now makes me regret not posting my final MCU slate predictions on here (posted them somewhere else) that I made weeks ago, because some of the dates I predicted indeed came true.

But now that the new dates have been picked, it's time to try to fill in the blanks with what we know, what has been announced, what has been hinted at, etc.

Anyways… The dates:

July 28, 2017
November 3, 2017
July 6, 2018
November 2, 2018
May 3, 2019

Some of those matched my predictions, I thought Marvel would release films on November 10, 2017 and November 9, 2018 respectively. It looks like Disney is okay with these dates, now Fox/DreamWorks has to think because 11/3/2017 and 11/2/2018 were first reserved for two DreamWorks films. Marvel movies will crush the DWA offerings, so I expect another slate change to happen. But where do those films move to? That's another story for another day…

Anyways, what are my predictions? Well, working off of the ones I did not post here:

Doctor Strange - July 8, 2016
Thor 3 - May 5, 2017
Ms. Marvel - July 28, 2017
Black Panther - November 3, 2017
Black Widow - July 6, 2018
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 - November 2, 2018
The Avengers 3 - May 3, 2019

If Avengers 3 is indeed a 2019 release, I'll be content because a summer 2018 date, to me, posed a real problem. Unless Marvel squeezed in 3 films in 2016, it seemed unrealistic to get all of those stories told while still getting to The Avengers' third outing. Marvel is willing to release three films a calendar year starting soon, which is a real plus. Now that two more dates have been claimed for 2017, it seems like the 3-a-year idea will become a reality. I do wonder if one more movie will be squeezed into 2018, but if not, it'll give other superhero movie makers room to breathe.

Also, a 5/3/2019 date for The Avengers 3 is perfect because the first week of May is an Avengers tradition, and a superhero movie tradition in general thanks to Spider-Man back in 2002. All of the Iron Man and Avengers films, plus Thor, were first weekend of May events. Captain America 3 and untitled 5/5/2017 are first weekend of May events as well. However, Sony/Marvel nabbed the first Friday of May 2018 for one of their Amazing Spider-Man films. Initially, I had predicted that Disney/Marvel would simply release The Avengers 3 on 5/25/2018… But of course, all signs point to it being a 5/3/2019 release.

I'm okay with that. If they have to wait four years to set the third epic, that's totally fine. Taking time is a precious thing to do.

As for my other choices… Well, Doctor Strange is obviously the next one after Captain America 3 (5/6/2016) because it has its director and writers, the cast will probably be announced at Comic-Con, and filming is set commence in the spring. There is one slight problem, though. Batman v Superman is going to have to move. As we all know, WB/DC wants to open it against Captain America 3. Not going to happen, and Kevin Feige recently said that they won't budge. WB/DC could move their big film to the traditional superhero mid-July spot, 7/22/2016 to be exact… Except that would only give Doctor Strange very few weeks to breathe. Doctor Strange would end up having to move.

Thor 3 makes sense for 5/5/2017, being the third installment in the series and one that'll most likely be climactic and massive - again, that first weekend of May is ideal for an event this size. Ms. Marvel has been hinted at, and a Black Widow spin-off also needs to happen. Black Panther is of course a given, we've known that would be a Phase 3 film for a while. Guardians of the Galaxy 2, of course, also a no-brainer. I also think Hulk will be a major player in the film, and it'll be a perfect lead-in to Avengers 3. You're probably wondering, what about Inhumans? The more I think about it, the more I see it being a Phase 4 film with perhaps a Netflix series building up to it. (Based on someone else's predictions that I happened to agree with.) Also, better to focus on the Guardians for now when it comes to the cosmic side instead of introducing another team of characters.

What are your predictions?

(via Box Office Mojo)

UPDATE 7/19: Variety confirmed that Doctor Strange will indeed be the 7/8/2016 release.

UPDATE 7/21: Director James Gunn denies that the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel will feature Hulk.

UPDATE 7/23: Sony changed up their Spider-Man slate. Sinister Six is set to open 11/11/2016 and The Amazing Spider-Man 3 will open sometime in 2018, leaving the 5/4/2018 slot vacant. Guess who moved in?

Anyways, updated predictions now that Marvel Studios plans to release three films in 2018…

Doctor Strange - July 8, 2016
Thor 3 - May 5, 2017
Ms. Marvel - July 28, 2017
Black Panther - November 3, 2017
Untitled Solo Hulk - May 4, 2018
Black Widow - July 6, 2018
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 - November 2, 2018
The Avengers 3 - May 3, 2019
