Back to the Grid: 'TRON 3' To Begin Filming Soon

The Disney news load just keeps getting bigger and bigger today...

A third TRON movie is officially happening! My Disney comrade PJ over at Omega Underground covered the news, thanks to Badass Digest's findings...

Even though we were told by various sources over time that a third TRON film was in development, I didn't think we were going to get one. Or at least one anytime soon. Disney has shown a resistance to live-action films like that in the recent years, what with no movement on projects like The Stuff of Legend, Terra Incognita, and Matched. Also note the barrage of remakes of their animated classics. Disney even supposedly considered TRON: Legacy an underperformer, as it made a good $400 million against a $170 million budget. Seems fine, right? But they marketed the heck out of it, some within the studio even thought it would be the "next Avatar".

Anyways, I am so glad this is finally happening!

Campbell notes that Bruce Boxleitner, who of course plays Alan Bradley in the original and the sequel (and TRON himself in the first film, he does not play TRON/Rinzler in the second), said back in January 2014 that the script was nearing completion.

"All I know is, they don’t tell me anything, but they want to do it. I would say probably the end of this year, for 2015 maybe. They don’t have any dates but I’m thinking from the scuttlebutt I’m hearing that’s it, but I don’t know anything for sure other than they do have a script they love, they’re still tweaking."

Interesting. Filming is set to commence in Vancouver in October, so that means that the film will most likely be ready by mid-to-late 2016. The last third months of 2016 are pretty much taken up by other Disney releases. Early 2017? Hmmm, let's see. Disney's 2017 slate currently looks like this...

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 - 5/5/2017
Toy Story 4 - 6/16/2017
Pirates of the Caribbean 5 - 7/7/2017
Untitled Spider-Man - 7/21/2017
Thor: Ragnarok - 11/3/2017
Untitled Pixar - 11/22/2017

Mostly Marvel and Pixar, and you know none of those will make way for TRON. Pirates of the Caribbean 5 is currently filming, and it should really be a 2016 release since it'll be done by the end of this year, but other projects got to 2016 first (like Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass and The Jungle Book), so that'll be staying as well.

I guess Disney can release it in March 2017. Again, if filming begins in October, then post-production work should be more than done by mid-to-late 2016. Disney shockingly doesn't have anything set for a March 2017 release yet, as they've been releasing tentpole pics during that month. It seems to be the prime spot for their live-action remakes, but...

The next live-action animated classic remake after Pete's Dragon is set to be Beauty and the Beast, and they're casting for that film right now. TRON 3's ready to film, so yes... March 2017. I can definitely see that happening. Beauty and the Beast will probably be a summer or fall release.

Joseph Kosinski is returning to direct the film, and Garrett Hedlund will return as Sam Flynn. Will the others, such as Olivia Wilde, return? Most likely.

The plot, according to Boxleitner, is this...

"I think it’s going to be a lot about taking the company back because if you remember Sam Flynn says to Alan at the end, just before he rides his bike off into the sunrise with Quorra, says, 'We’re going to take the company back.' That’s not the end of the movie. That’s the beginning of the next one. That’s foreshadowing. And you don’t get Cillian Murphy to do an unscripted cameo... I got a feeling Eddie Dillinger Jr.’s going to be as bad as his dad was."

Boxleitner also said that the film will take place in our world moreso than the Grid. Kind of a bummer, but it should work anyway. Maybe things from the Grid will show up in the real world, I mean, that has to happen at some point I think.

Anyways, this is great news all around. I love TRON, and I have a soft spot for its sequel even though I see it as more of a tribute to the original than a great sequel. Bring on TRON 3! Or whatever they decide to call it! (TRON: Destiny?)

UPDATE - March 16, 2015

Over the past few days, a few big Disney releases got release dates: The live-action Beauty and the Beast is set to open March 17, 2017 while Star Wars: Episode VIII will actually open on May 26, 2017 rather than a spot somewhere in December.

My best guess is that TRON 3 will take a page from the previous film, and will be a December 2017 release. Preferably December 14, 2017... We shall see.
