Welcome To Zootopia!: New Concept Art for Disney Animation's Next Revealed

Zootopia, Walt Disney Animation Studios' next film, is now just a full year away...

Since we're that much closer to the Burbank house's 55th animated feature, the studio decided to show us another look at the titular city on their Facebook page.

Stunning... Just stunning. Loaded with imagination and clever little details, typical Walt Disney Animation Studios brilliance. I love how the city buildings and structures are nature-ified, if that makes any sense. It's similar to Lasseter's Cars universe, and how different things are car-shaped and such. Seriously, I can't praise this artwork, concept, and story anymore. The project is one of the most imaginative things to come out of the studio if you ask me. We all know the premise and all the ins-and-outs about the city, it sounds super-cool.

However, read the Facebook post... You'll see that Byron Howard isn't the only director of this upcoming comedy-adventure. Rich Moore, director of Wreck-It Ralph, is now set to direct alongside the Bolt and Tangled director. Writer Jared Stern will be co-directing the film. Wow, quite the team!

Also, the new plot synopsis implies that rabbit Judy Hopps will be the main character, not Nick Wilde as some of us may have assumed...

"The modern mammal metropolis of Zootopia is a city like no other. Comprised of habitat neighborhoods like ritzy Sahara Square and frigid Tundratown, it’s a melting pot where animals from every environment live together—a place where no matter what you are, from the biggest elephant to the smallest shrew, you can be anything. But when optimistic Officer Judy Hopps arrives, she discovers that being the first bunny on a police force of big, tough animals isn’t so easy. Determined to prove herself, she jumps at the opportunity to crack a case, even if it means partnering with a fast-talking, scam-artist fox, Nick Wilde, to solve the mystery. Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Zootopia, a comedy-adventure directed by Byron Howard (Tangled, Bolt) and Rich Moore (Wreck-It RalphThe Simpsons) and co-directed by Jared Bush (Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero), opens in theaters on March 4, 2016.

Interesting... Interesting. Up until now I assumed that the foxy Wilde, who will be voiced by Jason Bateman, would be the lead but if Judy Hopps is the lead, count me in. I mean, it's pretty cool that they're making a female the star of a non-princess tale since the last four (not counting WinnieBig Hero 6, Wreck-It Ralph, Bolt, Meet The Robinsons) had male protagonists. The last non-princess/fairy tale story to have a female lead was 2004's Home On The Range... Weird...

Anyways, I'm more excited than ever before. Walt Disney Animation Studios has been on a roll, and with some great minds behind this new adventure, we're in for something spectacular next year!

  1. I'm surprised with Rich Moore, is back to another WDAS feature =), but what happened? he left Wreck it Ralph 2 for this?

  2. My assumption is that, since Ralph 2 won't be out until 2018 at the earliest, Rich Moore wants to work on something before being able to direct 'Wreck-It Ralph 2'.

  3. If Ralph 2 is even still a thing, that is.

  4. This had better be animated in Meander. I really want to see a feature film done in the style of Paperman or Feast.
