At Last!: Aardman's 'Shaun the Sheep' Gets A US Release Date!

Wow, right after finding out that Ratchet & Clank is getting something of a release, it has been announced that Aardman's latest, and critically-acclaimed, film has gotten a US release date!

The Shaun the Sheep Movie will be distributed by Lionsgate, and it will be released on August 7th of this year. They just confirmed this on their Twitter...

Not the best date ever, that's for sure. This pits it against Fox's Fantastic Four reboot, the week after that, Weinstein will open up their butchered version of 2013's Argentinian animated film Foosball. This film probably wasn't going to be a blockbuster anyway, as Aardman's post-Chicken Run efforts have all opened poorly here in the states. The last film of theirs, The Pirates!, had rather weak legs here. However, I think The Shaun the Sheep Movie won't have a hard time appealing to those who actually go and see it on opening weekend. I can see the legs for the film being good.

Anyways, let's hope it's another success for Aardman. It has grossed a solid $54 million overseas as of last week. It just opened in a few markets too, and it has many more to go. Norway doesn't get it until next February!

Best of all though... We are getting it in theaters here in the states. I was thinking it would go straight to home media, I thought this could be the first time an Aardman feature - a stop-motion one at that - wouldn't hit screens here in America. Silly me for worrying, and I wonder if they'll partner up with Lionsgate for future films when it comes to stateside distribution.

But yes, stop-motion and Aardman on the big screen once again!

  1. Well it's about time! I'll be there opening weekend. I've heard nothing but good things about it, so I'm looking forward to finally seeing it.
