In the Works: 'Frozen 2's Release Date Revealed? And a Mysterious New Project Too?

If you've been here long enough, you'll know that I track Walt Disney Animation Studios and what their slate is like. I believe the studio has been on a roll since Meet The Robinsons' release in spring 2007, as I feel the studio has been making solid-to-great films under John Lasseter's watch. Because of this, I'm always looking forward to the newest announcements from Team Burbank.

Anyways, for a long time, a few dates on Walt Disney Animation Studios' slate were mystery slots: 11/21/2018, 11/27/2019, and 11/25/2020...

While promoting Zootopia in France - which is opening there in a matter of weeks (lucky!), producer Clark Spencer talked about upcoming projects, notably Moana (the film's French subtitle is rather interesting: Vaiana, The Legend of the End of the World) and Gigantic. The article then mentions that Frozen 2 will indeed be Disney Animation's 2019 release, but it appears that Spencer didn't say anything. It just says Frozen 2, with 2019 after that. Take it with a grain of salt, but don't rule it out.

So if Frozen 2 turns out to be the Thanksgiving 2019 release, what opens Thanksgiving 2018? Is it Wreck-It Ralph 2? After all, director Rich Moore has just finished up Zootopia, so I have a feeling he'll return to the wrecker's world because he has championed a sequel since day one, and it was confirmed by people other than Disney higher-ups that one is indeed in the works.

Or maybe it's a little something called Inner Workings...

What is Inner Workings?

Head over to Disney Careers' marketing internship page and you'll see this...

"Walt Disney Animation Studios Marketing is responsible for the strategy and execution of marketing and communication plans to activate support cross-company for upcoming animated releases. We also design and implement marketing initiatives and outreach in support of the WDAS brand."

A Day in the Life…

Coordinating and executing Marketing and PR plans for Walt Disney Animation Studios upcoming releases, including Moana, Inner Workings and Gigantic."

Inner Workings...

Now, is this actually a feature film? Notice that it's wedged between Moana and Gigantic, though that probably doesn't indicate when it'll come out. Gigantic, as far as we all know, is feature #57 after Moana, opening 3/9/2018. Nothing from the studio is slated for 2017.

Release date theories aside, if it's a feature... What is it? Is it Dean Wellins' film? Did he scrap the space race project to do something else? Last year it was revealed that he's still got a feature film project going on at WDAS...

It could be a short film. Zootopia's lack of an attached short had me puzzled for a long while, but since screenings have been held and the premiere is right around the corner, I guess that film just won't have a short attached to it. (Bummer.) So is this the short that will be attached to Moana, then?

So much to ask, but it's good to hear about what Walt Disney Animation Studios has in the works. They're secretive about projects beyond early 2018, which is good.

What do you think? Do you think Inner Workings is a short? Or feature film? Will Frozen 2 open in 2019? Sound off below!

  1. I think Inner Workings might be a Mickey, Donald, and Goofy cartoon. He's in need of a big-screen comeback since Get a Horse! (the first Mickey Mouse cartoon short in 18 years) was so loved in theatres.

    1. Oh, I hope so! I also hope it's hand drawn.

    2. I don't think so. The title doesn't sound very Mickey Mouse-y.

    3. Oddly enough, it makes me think of 'Mickey Mouse Works'! But yeah, I think it's gonna be something new.

  2. I think that the 2018 release date is no longer un use because it was originali considered for Cosmic 3000 and the film has move it release date and back in production there is no longer that release date and it will come out in 2020/

An inner workings sounds like a mickey mouse short

    1. I know that Cosmic 3000/Galactic was originally scheduled to Nov. 2018, but how do you know that it was moved to 2020?

    2. Cosmic 3000 (was that even the real title? Or speculative? Galactic was confirmed to be a fake title) was actually never set in stone for 11/21/2018, but according to insiders - mainly Blue Sky Disney - the idea was to have it out by fall 2018, but it slumped into development hell as of Sept 2013. I have no idea whether it's still in some form of development or not. Some are saying it's indeed cancelled, but I need to see proof of this.

Anyways, 11/21/2018 is still on WDAS' slate. They're probably saving it for something like 'Wreck-It Ralph 2', or an original we've never heard of.

    4. But When disney pull of on octover the release date of all the movies they didn't mention the 11\21\2018 date
I don't know I just want that they announce something soon

    5. They didn't mention it because they were only mentioning new additions to the slate, or new changes. It also explains why Pirates 5, Episode VIII, and a handful of Marvel titles weren't on that slate. It wasn't the complete slate, just the changes/additions.

  3. I guess Inner Workings will be a short, and I also think that Frozen 2 will really be released on 2019. We have to keep in mind that Frozen was a huge success so if they want to make the sequel another success they have to release it soon, or people will just forget about Frozen and the film will flop. But we also have the Nov. 2018 and Nov. 2020 dates. Galactic, WIR 2, and Big Hero 7 have no release dates yet. And what about King of the Elves? Was it really cancelled???

    1. 'King of the Elves' had some work done on it back in early 2013, IIRC. Last time it was really in development was when they intended to release it in 2013, but 'Frozen' pulled ahead in the "development race". I have no idea if they still intend to make it, I don't think it has been cancelled.
