Unexpected Shocker: Disney Live-Action To Make 'A Wrinkle in Time'?
What's this? News on a live-action Disney film that's not a remake of an animated classic?
It appears that Disney wants to get Selma director Ana DuVernay (who had been courted to direct Black Panther for Marvel Studios until exiting it) to direct the long-reported A Wrinkle in Time adaptation for Disney's live-action studio. The very film, as reported months ago, will be written by Frozen writer-director Jennifer Lee herself.
I want to be optimistic about this, but I can't at the moment, given Disney's mishandling of live-action movies that aren't remakes of the iconic animated classics. I'm not talking about quality, I liked movies like Tomorrowland, The Lone Ranger, and John Carter of Mars. But... Those three movies flopped due to Disney's failure to market them properly, and as a result Disney pretty much eliminated anything that isn't a remake from their slate... Well, except The BFG and the Touchstone banner The Light Between Oceans, they couldn't torpedo those when Tomorrowland came out. They were way too far into pre-production...
But everything else that looked or sounded cool is gone. No Guillermo del Toro Haunted Mansion, no TRON 3, no The Stuff of Legend, no Matched, no Terra Incognita, I have a feeling the Jungle Cruise movie starring The Rock isn't going to happen, either. They once in a while announce that they're considering something more original, like Floors or Goblins, but you never hear anything about them after that one announcement. Meanwhile, the remakes move forward. Disney's current philosophy is to avoid something altogether if it doesn't work in some instances, rather than trying again and not screwing up with the marketing.
However... Getting DuVernay to direct is big, like really big! Jennifer Lee writing is also nothing to scoff at... But again, live-action Disney in the recent years have let me down time and time again. I will be beyond shocked if they actually greenlight this movie and go ahead with actually filming it.
Anyways, A Wrinkle in Time is based on the sci-fi novel of the same name, a story of a young girl searching for her government father who goes missing when working on something that can transport him into another dimension... The Tesseract! (Insert Marvel synergy joke here.) It's too good to pass up, plus... It's sci-fi! Disney needs a live-action sci-fi hit in this day and age, because most of those recent flops were sci-fi or sci-fi flavored movies.
Oddly enough, Disney did make a film based on this story 13 years ago... But it was a TV movie for Wonderful World of Disney, and I hear that version is not very good. You're probably thinking now, "But this is also a remake, so why are you supporting it?" It's not a remake of an iconic animated classic or one of the studio's live-action classics (like 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea), this is the first legitimate film adaptation of the book. Plus, excepting The BFG and Light Between Oceans, it's the only non-animated classic remake on their live-action slate.
I really hope it moves ahead, but I have a strong feeling it won't. Even with all that talent attached. What say you?
