Reason and Emotion Redux: 'Inner Workings' Is Disney Animation's Next Short

After a few months of waiting, we finally know what's up with that Inner Workings project...

It's a short film that will be attached to the studio's next, Moana, this coming autumn, but it will debut at Annecy on June 17th. The usual with short films that appear before Disney animated films that happen to be November releases...

Good news is, it'll be an extension of the visual experiments that were Paperman and Feast, and will take the seamless 2D/CG meshing even further. It is set to be directed by Leo Matsuda, a long-time story artist who has worked for different studios throughout the years. What is it about? It's "the story of the internal struggle between a man’s Brain—a pragmatic protector who calculates his every move, and his Heart—a free-spirited adventurer who wants to let loose"

As Oh My Disney notes, this is very much in line with Walt Disney's 1943 short Reason and Emotion, though many who don't know of that short will immediately think of Team Emeryville's brilliant Inside Out when this gets brought up, or Cranium Command. Either way, I'm very excited. I love the idea of the heart and the mind having different views on what to do, just like in real life! Plus it explores an idea that Inside Out didn't have.

The folks who attend Annecy will also get to see footage from Moana. Hopefully we get a teaser for that soon, because next month we're seeing the next big animated family film (Sony's Angry Birds Movie) and the next big non-Marvel Disney release, Alice Through the Looking Glass. I think the teaser is going to debut before one of those films, because I don't think it'll be here before Ratchet & Clank and/or Captain America: Civil War. Hopefully we get a first look at the visuals in this short soon.

What say you?

  1. Just like we predicted! It's a shame that Zootopia didn't have a short though.

  4. Good that Moana will have a short, I was dissapointed by the lack of a short with Zootopia.
