Blast Off: Reel FX's 'Kung Fu Space Punch' to Be Previewed at Annecy

I keep saying this, but... The Dallas-based Reel FX is the American animation studio to look out for...

The Book of Life, a quirky personal tale from director-writer Jorge Gutierrez, showed why. It looked unlike many recent computer animated features, looking like concept art come to life. On top of that, it was a solid adventure with some very cool ideas in it. While not a smash hit, it did respectable business, for Reel FX doesn't pump $100 million+ budgets into their pictures nor do the movies really have so much hanging on their backs.

Gutierrez is set to make more features for the studio, and this was made known a few years back when his next project - a then-untitled "kung fu space western" with pirates - was announced. Now, that project has a title: Kung Fu Space Punch...

Here's a first look at the two leads...

An updated synopsis, too...

One of the galaxy's most charming space biker outlaws, Johnny Holliday and his ragtag crew of rebel bandits are put on a collision course with the legendary villain Kathulo to determine the fate of the galaxy. Along the journey, Johnny will also have to deal with Ramona Sanchez, a hot-headed childhood rival who protects their town of Rio Bravo.

The film, in a presumably far-from-finished work-in-progress form, will debut at Annecy this coming June. The new logo is here, too - it's just an update of the old one.

As expected, the film is going to be a visual outlier in a world of hyperreal CG pictures, and that's great! The story itself sounds pretty awesome, too! Animation should definitely tackle spacey, cross-genre, fantastical adventures like these, instead of your usual cartoony comedies and such.

What say you?
